Dr. Mead was activc in civic affairs in Hattiesburg and the state of Mississippi. He organized the first Boy Scout troop at the Court Street Methodist Church and was director of the Selective Service Board for Forrest County during World War II. He was a member of Main Street Methodist Church and a member of the State Eleemosynary Board of the state of Mississippi for a number of years. He was a Vanderbilt medical alumni representative for the state of Mississippi for a number of years and continued to support Vanderbilt University throughout his life. He was an avid sportsman, primarily hunting and fishing throughout south Mississippi, even in Honey Island swamp and the Pearl River area.
