Reception marks dedication, of new Johnie Walker Murphy Lung Center

The dedication of the state?s first American Lung Association of Arkansas branch office on Thursday was a cause for celebrating the life of one of El Dorado?s leading ladies, Johnie Walker Murphy. * v ?This is a bittersweet occasion,? said Ctfarles' Murphy, ? retired board chairman of Murphy Oil Corporation and husband of the late Johnie Walker Murphy, as lie stood before a crowd of-friends and well-wishers. '<
The late Mrs. Murphy was a victim of lung disease, and the Johnie Walker Murphy Lung * Center was formed as a partnership between the ALAA, the SHARE Foundation arid the Murphy Foundation. A--The Lung Center hoSted a open house on Thursday at its offices located at 403 W. Oak. The reception, however, was held at the nearby Area Health Education Center?s conference center due to the large number of people in attendance.
?This is very community-oriented... (and) AHEC wants to be open to community-spirited events,? said Jim Kox of AHEC about the neighborly exchange.
During the dedication, sever-?al personal friends of Mrs. Murphy-spoke-about her spirit. /of generosity, ?not only with her wealth but also of her time and organizational skills ... deeds done for themselves, not for public recognition,? said Bill Nolan of the-SHARE Foundation. '	1

The SHARE Foundation and the MurphyvFoundation grants fund anti-smoking programs vsuch as Highr. School Heroes and'?Healthy,.Lungs' Month, which train high* school1 students to remain smoke-free.
Other' programs include the Better Breathers Club support groups, Asthma In-Services and Open?Airways for School, which ? provides education to asthmatic children, their parents, teachers, school ?nurses and day care personnel to help 'minimize' the effects'of this chronic condition'.1 ,	-	-
