I was fascinated by the large black flying fox bats that periodically visited New Guinea in search of food. One could spot them flying in by the thousands from the ocean and alighting in the cocoanut trees and other jungle foliage. They appeared to be about the size of our American buzzard. They are called "flying foxes" because they have foxlike faces with large eyes, simple ears, and most typically, a big muzzle.
