This booklet is the direct result of the interest of my three friends, Mary Hateley Somerville, Ann Laughlin and Muriel Tucker, her mother, who asked me to come as a guest to the Huguenot tea in May and then asked me some questions I couldn't answer.
I dedicate this booklet to my grandfather, Thomas Jacob Poitevent, whom I never knew, but who has touched my life in so many countless ways.
The person to whom I would most like to hand this booklet is Antoine the elder, as an answer to the frightful doubts, fears and uncertainties which must have beset him as he gathered his family together and fled from prosperity and comfort in France into the unknown.
And to my always encouraging and helpful husband, George, without whose generosity this booklet could never have been compiled.
