Our Poitevent ancestor is James Poitevent, seventh child of Peter and Susannah, who married Mary Devane, daughter of Thomas Devane and Margaret Conde. Mary's brother was grandfather of William Rufus Devane King, vice president of the United States under Franklin Pierce in 1853- Mary?s mother, Margaret Conde, was niece of Prince Louis de Bourbon de Conde. She fled from France with her husband disguised as his page. (See letters on Devane family in last section.)
James and Mary had seven children. After James' death, Mary married Thomas Corbett. (I shall reprint the will of Mary?s father, Thomas Devane following the will of James Poitevent.)
James Poitevent's will was obtained from the Clerk of Superior Court, New Hanover County, North Carolina, and I did not find it abstracted in either Grimes or Olds. The will was written 12 October, 1761, after the birth of his last son on the first of October. James died the next June.
