Colosio was expected to follow the principles of the Salinas
government. Stability has been a keynote and the opening of free trade with the U.S. and Canada provided a high degree
of assurance that the Mexican economy would contain to improve.
Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de I,eon, the second choice to Colosio appears to have a satisfactory background in government.
Zedillo served President Salinas as Secretary of Budget and Education. While the opposing parties will undoubtedly come on strong (governors have been elected by a second party in three states), the PRI should prevail. And, I believe,
Sedillo will be elected.
But guerrillas on the Southern border, and an assassin in the North bring forward the problem which has long plaqued Mexico -
-	- - unequal progress among people with startling differences. The young lady nicely dressed with rings on her fingers and a well fed tummy, walks by (unseeing) the Indian lady in makeshift garb, crouched on the curb with hand out-stretched pleading for a centavo to buy food - most often accompanied by a tiny child.
The people of Mexico are alarmed by these recent events. While responsive to the outburst of violence, there has been a wave of unlawful activity which threatens the gains toward a modern
