It it worthwhile to reflect that the aftermath of the American Revolution was the French Revolution, which ended with the Napoleonic era, culminating in America with the Louisiana purchase . The result was that France lost practically all her American possessions except for a few islands, and Americo was shared between the United States, Spain, and England . One minor result of the French Revolution was the revolt in San Domingo (Haiti), which transformed this island paradise from one of the wealthiest of the French possessions to one of the most backward nations on earth.
The Bicentennial is a year for reflections of the events of the past 200 years. In the 18th century, America was all shared by England, France, and Spain. In the nineteenth, France had lost everything, and America was shared by England, Spain, and the United States. At the beginning of the twentieth century, even Spain had lost all her American ' possessions with revolt after revolt of her former colonies, (which remain Spanish in culture although not in political aspirations). The winners? Seemingly, only the United States and England!
