name with that of his great-great-grandmother. As already mentioned, his grandmother, Elizabeth "Betsey" Crosby died when he was a small child and he never really knew her. David no doubt got his misinformation from his elderly father who may have had some level of dementia in his last years while his father lived with him.
We have not been able to identify who Elizabeth "Betsey" Crosby's father, Abijah Crosby, is (her husband and father with same name!), but we have identified who her mother is. She is Betsey Sherman, baptized on April 23, 1780 (probably born that year also) in South Salem Westchester Co. NY at the Church of Christ Church. Her sibling's baptism records are also found in this church as well as her parent's marriage record.
This Betsey Sherman is identified as the mother of our Elizabeth "Betsey" Crosby for a variety of reasons:
1.	She is the only Betsey	Sherman living in that	area of	New York at
that time.
2.	Her age fits	perfectly with key events in	her life.
3.	At least two	of her siblings (Stephen and	Lewis) lived and died	in
Berne, Albany Co., two (Thomas and Enoch)	lived and died in nearby
Nassau, Rensselaer Co.,	and one (David)	lived	in Troy,	Rensselaer	Co.
4.	Her parents moved from	Westchester Co.,	NY to	Nassau,	Rensselaer Co.
on May 11, 1793.
5.	Her first six grandchildren (children of Elizabeth "Betsey" Crosby) were born in Albany Co. indicating she (Elizabeth "Betsey" Crosby) lived there early on until 1834.
6.	The names of	Abiel, Stephen, Mary, David,	etc. are common to
these Sherman and Crosby families.
While this is not absolute proof, we feel this is enough circumstantial evidence to link this Betsey Sherman to our Abijah Crosby.
Betsey Sherman's parents were Abiel Sherman and Mary Boughton, often misspelled as "Bouton" or "Bouten". On Betsey's baptismal record, her father is name as "Abiel Shearman". "Abiel Sherman and Mary Boughton married on Nov. 5, 1767" at the Church of Christ in South Salem, Westchester Co., NY.
Abiel Sherman was an American Revolutionary Soldier and received U.S. and New York State pensions for his service. From his pension records, we learn that he was born on March 7, 1744 and lived in Salem Westchester Co., NY at the time of his enlistment. He died on July 31, 1834 in Nassau, NY. He married "Mary Bouten" on November 15, 1767 at South Salem, NY. He is buried with a headstone in Nassau, NY cemetery and the headstone reads "Abiel Sherman, died July 31,
1834, aged 90 yr, 4 mo, 24 ds" (or born March 7, 1744) . Abiel Sherman is buried next to his wife whose headstone reads, "Mary Sherman, wife of Abiel Sherman, died Nov. 2, 1840 aged 90 yr, 3 mo, 9 ds" (or born July 24, 1750).
Abiel Sherman and Mary Boughton had the following children that were all baptized at the Church of Christ in Salem, NY:
