deMontluzin, Rene Sr.  -  February 18, 1959

Rene deMontluzin Sr., until recent months the oldest active pharmacist in Mississippi, died about 5:45 Wednesday night in the home of his only son, Rene Jr., at 113 deMontluzin Ave. He was 93.

The body is in Fahey funeral home where a wake will be observed and prayers said tonight. The Rev. Charles R. Johnson, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, will officiate at services at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. A Masonic burial will follow at Cedar Rest Cemetery,

Mr. deMontluzin, a past honorary president of the Mississippi State Pharmaceutical As- sociation, could be seen daily in the Beach Street drugstore his father founded in 1878 until he became ill a few months ago.

Born Dec. 2, 1865, in St. James Parish, La., he was the son of the late Ludovic Adrian and Reine Helluy deMontluzin, both originally of Luneville, France. He was married to the late Venie L. Word deMontluzin.

As a youth Mr. deMontluzin served as a lieutenant in the Coast Company of the Mississ- ippi State Militia. Since boyhood he was active in the drugstore which remains, under the proprietorship of Rene deMontluzin Jr., as a historic landmark of the town.

He received his license as a pharmacist in 1893. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of the Hamasa Temple of Meridian, and of Bay St. Louis Lodge 429, F and AM.

Known affectionately as Mr. Rene, he retained the tradition of old school French charm and humor which his father brought when he came here in 1878 from a post as professor at a small Louisiana college. The elder deMontluzin founded the drugstore as a hobby when doctors told him to cut activities after a heart attack. He lived to be 88.

Survivors include his grand-daughter, Lorraine deMontluzin; a niece, Mrs. George Doll of New Rochelle, N.Y., and a nephew, Col. R, E. E. deMontluzin of New Orleans.
