NOTE: Commodore Walter G. Chamberlain ’87 was significantly instrumental in organizing and promoting the new chapter and was unanimously elected as the first president of the BWYC Chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel in 1988. There followed a 10 year period of inactivity from 1989 to 1998. Pursuant to the efforts of Commodore Clement S. Benvenutti ‘95 the chapter was reactivated in 1999 and has maintained its active status until the present. Commodore Benvenutti ’95 has ably and generously served 5 consecutive terms as the chapter’s Secretary/Treasurer from 1999 through 2003. Blue Gavel has been a good support group to BWYC. There are others, but, one good example is the Commodore’s Table Project that was worked hard on by Commodores Maurice Eagan ‘78, Anthony Trapani, Jr. ’93 and Woody Santa Cruz '82, ’83 to advertise, sell, design, have made and provide for use in the BWYC Trophy Room Lounge in 1999. Another good project was the auto front bumper flag/burgee plate for former Commodores that Commodore Anthony Trapani ’93 designed, had produced and markets for the BWYC Blue Gavel. Most worthy of mention are the good BWYC Blue Gavel parties that have been hosted at the home of Commodore and Mrs. Basil Kennedy ’86 over the years thanks to their good and kind hospitality. BWYC Blue Gavel is a valuable resource to the leadership of BWYC because of their availability as an advisory source for support, guidance, advice, consultations and recommendations on all aspects of yacht club management and operations based on many cumulative years of experience. It should be clear that the activities of this group does not in anyway usurp the authorities or the responsibilities of the standing Flag Officers or the Board of Governors of BWYC. The Charter for the BWYC Chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel is framed (thanks to Commodore Ray Stieffel, Jr. ’73, ‘74) and it currently hangs in the BWYC Dining Room on the north wall just to the east of the main entrance door.
