FORT MAUREPAS
(Old Biloxi)
The exact location of Le Vieux Fort has been a puzzle to those who have tried to identify it from written reports,
Gayarr£ (1) places it “On the east side at the mouth of the bay, as it were,” and goes on to say, “There is a slight swelling of the shore about four acres square sloping gently to the woods in the background, and on the right and left of this two deep ravines running to the bay ***** in a parallel line to each other.”
De la Tour described it (2) as “Situated in a spot surrounded by marshes” and says there was very little ground for an establishment and that boats drawing only one or two feet cannot approach the landing or earth nearer than twenty fathoms.”
Hamilton (3) speaks of “Fort De Maurepas ***** on the Back Bay of Biloxi;***** that bluff behind the Louisville and Nashville Railroad bridge.” He also says that “At the entrance of Biloxi Bay, perhaps not far from the present railroad cut, it was proposed to build a battery to defend the entrance.” He doubts that it was erected.
