SMUGGLING ON THE GULF COAST The Inspector of Customs in the New Orleans District has reported to the Treasury Department that he has finally succeeded in obtaining full information in regard to the operations of a gang of smugglers and desperadoes, who have long had their haunts among the swamps and bayous of	the Gulf coast,	and have	been	carrying	on
a successful business in	defrauding the revenue.
The gang consists principally of Chinamen, Portuguese, Malays and Creoles, led by two white men named Wright and Smith.
The Inspector states that with the knowledge he is possessed of he is confident of being able to effectixsiyually break up all illicit trade in that district, and warns the Department to be on the alert along the Rio Grande in Texas,	as he thinks that	most	of
the gang will go in that	direction.
