BRIEF HISTORY OF HANCOCK 30UNTT ( GONT.)
Hancock County played a very important politacal role in the war of 1812 and after* Pages could be written about this period of time and the Historic History of Hancock County. To name a few. Many regiments of soldiers black and white were formed from Hancock County. In the Bay of St. Louis there was a Sea Battle which took place and ships were sunk in the Bay* At this time the stores of the town of Shieldsborough were burned. The president of the first Constitutional Convention was from Hancock Countyri and many other residents played a important role in the forming of the Constitution of the State of Mississippi in Hancook County. The first flax of the Uhited States was raised in Hancock County at Pearling** ton* These are only a few of the many Historic events which took place here*
Historic buildings of Hanock County were built prior to the city of Bay St* Louis Incorporation. Shieldborough 1818 - 1868 is the area of the corporate limits of Bay St. Louis which will be designated as a Historic District subject to a planned Architectural/Historical survey of the buildings* This is a project which is well underway and hope to be completed withing a year* (See letter of Dept, of Archives and History dated Febraary 1$9 1978).
We feel the Cities of Waveland and Bay St, Louis will benefit by these Historic bicycle tours on the Beach Roast from Buccaneer Park, keeping in mind that the present environmental atmosphere of the Beach Road be maintained to its present level.
