Richard Sawtell: He made a will in Watertown, Massachusetts, May 16, 1692. Richard died August 21, 1694 in Watertown, Massachusetts. Richard was probably from Somersetshire, England. He first appears in New England records on 25 July 1636 as a proprietor of Watertown, Mass, where he was granted one acre of land, indicating that he was a single man. He lived for more than twnety-five years there and then, with sons Jonathan and Zachariah, became an original proprietor and settler of Groton, Massachusetts. He served as the first town clerk there from 1662 to 1664. When King Philip's War broke out in 1675, his was one of the five garrison houses in Groton. The town was burned on March 13, 1676 and all the inhabitants were driven out. He and his family returned to Watertown.

By 1644, he had acquired about 360 acres of land in what now part of Boston.

Point of origin: England. He received a grant of land in Hingham in 1636. He and his family were among the first settlers.

His homestead in Newton was near the Brookline boundary and near a beautiful sheet of water which has since borne his name: "Hammond Pond." He was one of the wealthiest men in town in his day.
