Andrew Jackson Jr. to Sarah Jackson
Steam Boat Danl. Boone near Vifcksburg Miss
Decembr 5th 1859
My Dear Sarah,
After leaving you on Thursday last I reached Nashville in time to transact a little business?but did not get Samis. Colt shipped on board the Steamer that day?but left him in charge of Mr. A Hamilton to ship for me the next day on the good Steamer Sami Kirkman?I went on board and took a bill of Laden for him? but could not draw for the money until he reached Cincinnati? I'll try to get the draft discounted in New Orleans for Sam?so that he can get it there?which will suit him twice as well?&c &c?
I did not reach Memphis until Saturday morning at 7 O'clock altho I left Nashville on Thursday evening?we had a most violent rain snow & hail storm all day on Friday & it continued on all night & all day on Saturday & Saturday night & mostly Sunday?it turned very cold & freezing?I had a rough time of it for two nights on the rail road?we could not well [run] & were greatly detained--the weather has been very unpleasant ever since very cold?I transacted my business partly in Memphis?with a promise to have it all [fixed] in a few days & sent on to me?if they will do so, all will be right?but I doubt it very much?now a days there is Little or no confidence to be placed in most of mankind--&c. &?
I expect to reach Vicksburg to night (Monday) the 5th inst--and on tomorrow (Tuesday) [evg] be in New Orleans?I'll spend Wednesday there?and go over to Clifton on Thursday morning &
