I remember one time when they were little, I put George & Verdlee on one side of the yard and Herbert and Lena on the other side to clean. Verdlee & George finished their sided first because Lena & Herbert always played around instead of doing their work. They thought I was going to make them help them, but I didn?t.
Lillian was the worst child in the world to bite. She would bite Lena and Verdlee all the time. Tony never would do her anything to make her stop, so one time I made them bite her back and she never bit them again.
Mrs. Lind, Everita?s mother, would make the boys shirts so they could go to school.
On Sunday mornings we would cross the bayou and walk over to church. We had to dress ourselves. Tony would go with Papa and us. Sometime we would meet the Haas?s and Depreo?s and they would walk with us. Sometimes we would meet Maude and Shell Necaise & the Hart family, and we all went together.
One time we went up to Dedeaux to visit someone and had to hurry home to pick our gourds and when we got home somebody had stolen them all. They said it was some people that lived on a riverboat down the bayou, (where the boat launch is now). Manuel and Walter knew where they were but I didn?t.
Mr. Manuel Castro would bring over groceries. He would bring them in his horse and wagon. Papa would go take him the order and pay him and he would bring the order to our house. Flour was in 501b sack. He had an old mule. Mr. Castro didn?t have any children of there on. They raised J.W. Olsen & Helen. Mr. Castro & Miss. Ella were my mama?s GodParents.
As in deep thought Ann said, ? I wonder where grandma?s sewing machine is?
I never knew much about those other Shiyou?s that drifted off from us.
Manuel and Walter helped with the other children, but;they had to work. They did all they could.
Mrs. Ellen Lind, Everita?s mother taught me how to sew. She showed me how to put a collar in there shirts and how to put a yoke on. How to make a buttonhole with a needle and thimble.
Grandma Shiyou wouldn?t let me sew on her sewing Machine. She said I was too young to fool with it. Aunt Maude would come and me and her and Everita would sew all day long.
